Zelma H. Conner, 80, of Valdosta, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Tift Regional Hospital. She was recently preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert D. Conner.
Zelma was born in the coal country of Pineville, Kentucky, on December 5, 1934, to Andy and Ellen (Goodwin) Hembree, and moved to Valdosta with Robert in 1958. She was a member of Cat Creek Primitive Baptist Church, and supported her husband as a Preacher's wife, homemaker, and assisting him with his accounting practice. Mrs. Conner enjoyed bowling and playing softball in her younger years.
She was one of eight brothers and sisters, and is survived by sisters, Jean Carroll and Charlene Titus; and a brother, Herman Hembree. She was a giving mother to three children and the wives of those children, Raymond and Cynthia (Williams) Conner, Steven and Jane (Shumpert) Conner, and Gregory Conner. She was a happy and laughing grandmother to 11 grandchildren, spouses of those grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, Austin and Gail Conner, Chad Conner, Ellen Conner, Mark and Amy (Conner) Bailey, Thomas and Le'Anna Conner, Sara Conner, Erin Conner, Jackson Conner, Michael Conner, Michelle Conner, and Noah Conner, and Jax Conner. The companionship and constant laugh of Zelma will also be missed by her many friends of south Georgia and the fellowship of those friends at numerous Primitive Baptist churches.
The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Friday, May 15, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. All friends are also invited to a noon-day meal at Cat Creek Primitive Baptist Church at 4919 Cat Creek Road, Valdosta, Georgia 31605, on Saturday, May 16. Following the meal, the funeral service for Mrs. Conner will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Cat Creek Primitive Baptist Church, where she will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at New Ramah Cemetery in Ray City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the New Ramah Cemetery Trust, 3148 Garner Rd., Ray City, GA 31645, or the church of your choice.
