Willis Henry Daugharty

November 25, 1923 — April 28, 2011

Willis Henry Daugharty, 87, of Valdosta departed from this life on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on November 25, 1923 in Howell, Georgia to the late Frank and Lizzie Hughes Daugharty. He was a caring individual and always had a kind word for all he met. His passing will leave a huge void in the lives of those who loved him. Mr. Daugharty attended school in Echols County and served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II as an ambulance driver. When returned from his military service he helped care for his family, as he was one of the oldest of nine children. Mr. Daugharty worked for Railway Express for several years before beginning work for Southern Railroad as an engineer, which is now Norfolk Southern. He served as secretary for the railroad union before his retirement in 1984. Mr. Daugharty was a member of the Crossroads Baptist Church where he was a member of the Senior Men's Sunday School Class, also a mason and a shriner.

He leaves to mourn his passing a daughter and son in law, Brenda and Mike Bland of Valdosta, a grandson, Jason Bland of Paris, France, a granddaughter and grandson in law, Catherine and Matt Elrod of Lawrenceville, his brothers and sisters in law, Bruce Daugharty, Ralph and Juanita Daugharty all of Lake Park, Seward and Janice Daugharty of Stockton, Iona Daugharty of Statenville and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Millirons Daugharty, brothers, Kenneth Daugharty, Warren Daugharty, sisters, Ruby Carter, Iris Brooks and Maryemma Parrish and a nephew, Kenneth Charles Daugharty.

Funeral services will be held at 11am, Monday, May 2, 2011 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Ken Alford and Rev. Charlie Scarbrough ministers at Crossroads Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
