Willie B. Lewis, 81, of Valdosta, died on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Berrien Nursing Center after a lengthy illness. Born in Valdosta on November 12, 1937, he was a lifelong resident of this area. For decades, beginning in the 1950’s Willie helped the Slocum family move furniture into homes all over South Georgia. First with Slocum & Son’s Furniture and later at Gene’s Galleries. When Gene’s Galleries ceased operations in the late 1970’s, Willie started work for Carson McLane Funeral Home maintaining the grounds and helping the late Clifford Pittman with the facilities and errands. Willie was also a lifelong, avid golfer. Willie was quite skilled at golf, possibly to the surprise of some he played with.
Willie is survived by five sons, Shawn Berrian, of Valdosta, Willie Earl Gray, Norvel Grey, Tabias Gray and Robert Everett, all of Hahira; and three daughters and two sons in law, Stacy & Kelvin Smith of Valdosta, Mattie Gray of Hahira and Barbara & Johnny Jones; and special cousins and their spouses, Freddie & Ann Joiner of Valdosta, and Shirley Daniels and numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by two sons, Michael & Willie B. Lewis, Jr, and a special cousin Joe Lewis Daniels.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Rev. Frank Gupton will officiate.
