William Stanley Tedders, 78, of Valdosta died Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at South Georgia Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born on January 5, 1932 in Rhine, Georgia to the late Robert Hoyt Tedders and Lizzie Mae Stanley Tedders. While in elementary school his family moved to Jacksonville, Florida and had lived in Valdosta since 1963. Mr. Tedders served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and after an honorable discharge from the Navy he attended Jacksonville University. He began a career in banking with the Atlantic National Bank in Jacksonville and in 1959 he began working with the Metropolitan Insurance Company as an agent and in 1963 was promoted to Agency Manager in Valdosta. Before moving to Valdosta he was named the Most Outstanding Insurance Man in Jacksonville with less than two years of service. He established Tedders Insurance Agency on Central Avenue in the 1970's and while in the insurance field he completed the LUTC and the CLU programs. After retiring from the insurance field Mr. Tedders worked with the Lowndes County Sheriff's Department. Mr. Tedder's has served the First Baptist Church as Chairman of the Board of Deacon, Church Treasurer, Chairman of the Benevolent Committee, Finance Committee and teacher. He has served as the President and Lt. Governor of Georgia District of Kiwanis. Mr. Tedders was a Mason and a Shriner. He was a member of the Georgia Sheriff's Association and the Peace Officer Association of Georgia.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margie Carter Tedders, a daughter and son in law, Melissa Margie Tedders Stephens and Michael Stephens, two granddaughters, Christina Melissa Stephens and Callie Margie Stephens all of Valdosta, a brother, Emory H. Tedders of Jacksonville, Fla., a sister in law, Carolyn Carter of Valdosta and a number of cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Aldie Saralene Tedders.
Funeral services will be held at 4pm, Friday, May 14, 2010 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Phil West officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
