William Robert Watson, Sr., 82, of Hahira, died on Sunday, March 1, 2015 at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was born on February 28, 1933 in Morven, Georgia to the late Stanley Bennett and Gladys Aline Newton Watson. Mr. Watson graduated from Valdosta High School and played for Coach Bazemore and was affectionately known as "Chug Chug". He graduated from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor's degree in business administration and was the in house accountant for 25 years with the Valdosta Neurological Institute. Along with being an avid football fan, one of the things he enjoyed was playing golf. One of his proudest accomplishments was being able to intercede on behalf of the Hazelhurst Golf Course when it began to fall on hard times. He was able to maintain the running and continuation of this facility to ensure the community had this special amenity available for them. Mr. Watson was a veteran of the United States Air Force and he was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mickey Croft Watson of Hahira; two daughters and a son-in-law, Fonda Diana Watson of Ray City and Ronda Joan and Larry Edmondson of Hahira; a son and daughter-in-law, William Robert, Jr., and Nancy Watson of Evans, Georgia; grandchildren, Vera and Tommy Lightsey of Summerville, South Carolina, Kelly and Craig Floyd of Hazelhurst, Georgia, Gwen and Laney Carter of Baxley, Georgia, Kyle Edmondson of Hahira, and William R. Watson III of Evans, Georgia; 5 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Nicholas, Connor, Caden and Ryan; a sister, Joann Moore of Valdosta; 3 sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Kay and Mike Sikes of Lakeland, Georgia, Joyce Croft and Mildred Croft both of Valdosta; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Watson.
Services for William Robert Watson, Sr., will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Stokes officiating. The burial will follow in the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
