William Milan Cullen

William Milan Cullen, 91, died May 9, 2011, at his home. Bill, born in Maysville, Kentucky, on August 14, 1919, was the son of Paul and Theresa Cullen. He is predeceased by his parents and his three siblings, Paul, Mary Courtney, and Mary Catherine.

Joining the military in 1943, he served honorably in the U. S. Army Air Force for over 30 years and during WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He was one of the original Air Force men who were assigned to start up Moody Air Force Base, and he retired from Moody in 1993. Until his death he was the oldest Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force. In his later years he was a pioneer member in establishing Moody's Extended Family, which serves the needs of the injured service men and women of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Immediately after retirement, he went to work for the Department of Public Safety at Valdosta State College. There he eventually worked for Jack Beverstein, who became his best friend for over 35 years.

Bill was a member of Saint John The Evangelist Catholic Church for over sixty years and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Maxine Cooper Cullen, three sons, William Patrick Cullen (Linda) of Valdosta, GA, Paul Pierce Cullen of Wiscasset, MA, and Christopher Milan Cullen of Phoenix, AZ, one daughter, Theresa Alice Cullen of Athens, GA, and eight grandchildren, Sean Patrick Cullen (Lisa), Kelly Jean Irvine (Jeff), Erin Michael Cullen (Penny), Courtney Timmons Griffin (Tim), Catherine Timmons Levy (Ben), Cullen McReynolds Timmons, Lauren Theresa Cullen, and Donald Milan Cullen. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. The family wishes to acknowledge Janice Lofton, who was the CNA caretaker for both Bill and Maxine.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 12, 2011 at eleven a. m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Father Dan O'Connell officiating. Entombment with full military honors will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from ten a. m. until eleven a. m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Moody's Extended Family, 742 Lake Laurie Drive, Valdosta, GA 31605. Condolences to the family may be expressed online at www.mclanefuneralservices.com.
