William M. (Bill) Cargile

November 26, 1928 — September 24, 2012

William M. (Bill) Cargile, 83, of Lake Park, died on Monday, September 24, 2012, at Fellowship Home in Brooks County. He was a resident of Fellowship Nursing Home the last two years of his life; and it was here that his Father came to take him home. Bill was born in Douglas, on November 26, 1928; he was the son of the late Ishmael John and Rosa Lupo Cargile. He and his family moved to Valdosta when he was just a young boy, and Valdosta has remained his home.
He was a Master Sergeant in the US Army, serving with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was proud of his service to his country. After serving abroad, Dad returned to his hometown, where he continued to serve his community and family in countless ways.
He was a custom home builder and owner of Cargile Construction. In 1955, dad purchased his first contractors license in Lowndes County; License #123. W.M. Cargile Construction was started with a nail apron, hammer, saws, and good crew of men, determination, integrity and true grit. Contracts were bound by a handshake. His company expanded to include Pocahontas Collier and Sam Bivins; and for over forty years they grew Valdosta and the surrounding counties with a furry.
Although Granddaddy was known throughout Lowndes County, he was never a member of an organization per say. You would seldom find him at fund raising events, awards banquets, exquisite dinners…Instead; he was a member of a secret society…a society that few know anything of. It's called "The Left-Right Organization". It took us kids literally years to figure out how it worked and what its ultimate societal contribution was. There were no dues---ever. The down side to its membership---once you join, you are on call 24/7 and the penalty for early withdrawal…well, let's say…would leave you completely broken.
The "Left- Right Organization": An organization where the left hand does not tell the right hand the good deeds of its actions. Matthew 6:3-4: But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing; that your charitable deed may be in secret; and you Father who sees in sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.
As children, our family routinely:
Moved people, from underneath the bridge to a motel, from the street to a shelter, from a car to an apartment……The Right- Left Organization.
Played Santa…but could never talk about it once the goods were on the ground by the front door. We just drive away…The Left -Right Organization.
Fed the hungry; Dad NEVER passed up anyone who looked remotely in need of food or shelter. Dad loved the old Hardee's downtown. It was his ministry ground. There was a man who lived on the street that first met dad by informing him that he was sitting in his seat. Underneath the man's arm was an old bible. Dad's initial response was "why don't you let me buy you something to eat and we'll discuss that book you're holding under your arm". That was a relationship that lasted for years and years. First encounter: a cup of coffee. Last encounter: a proper burial for Henri. The Left Right Organization. The stories could go on and on…the legacy will live on and on. We will be certain of it.
Survivors are his son, William Michael Cargile of Valdosta; daughter and son in law, Nancy Kim and Russ Blocker of Anchorage, Alaska; son and daughter in law, Mark Anthony and Beth Cargile of Valdosta; grandchildren, David and Mary Van Ausdall, Sean Van Ausdall, Tony and Jill Cargile, Travis and Kathryn Cargile, Wayne Cargile, Thomas and Jennifer Cargile, Shane Cargile, Chandler Cargile, Payton James Rand; great grandchildren, Devon Van Ausdall, Connors Van Ausdall, Kate Van Ausdall, Kacey Anna Van Ausdall, Liam Cargile; brother and sister in law, Gene and Eddie Cargile of Austin, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.
