William K Postel, 69, passed away in the early morning of Sunday, June 18, 2023, at Langdale Hospice after a brief illness. He was born March 23, 1954, in Springfield, MA. His parents were the late Walter P. Postel and Margaret K Sullivan. He attended Cathedral High School in Springfield, MA and Valdosta State College. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.
He was a police officer for Springfield Police Department, and later came to work for the Valdosta State University Police Department where he retired in 2020. He was a proud, active member of the Sons of the American Legion at the American Legion Post 13 in which he volunteered in the Auxillary as an historian. Those who knew him remember him for his intelligence, wit, and patriotism.
Bill was particularly interested in World War II, with his father having served with the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Army Infantry Division in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. For his heroic service at Mindanao, his father received a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart. His father was a first-generation German immigrant who stepped up and served the United States when he was called upon.
As a tribute to Bill, his closest friends gathered and with his cremation urn, took Bill for a ride around town in his friend’s 1942 Jeep Willy. This was something he always wanted to do and his closest friends saw that the dream was fulfilled, giving Bill a perfect send off.
Bill is survived by several close friends, relatives, and his cat, Bella. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Katherine Warren, and wife Karen Duke Postel. He will be buried with his deceased wife at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens in Valdosta, GA.
