William Joseph (Joe) Wetherington

William Joseph (Joe) Wetherington, 52, of Lake Park, died on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at South Georgia Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Joe was born in Valdosta on July 12, 1964, grew up here and graduated from Valdosta High School in 1982. While at Valdosta he played football, and was named to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Super 11, State Football Player list. He went on to the Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated with an Industrial Management Degree in 1987. While at Georgia Tech, he was in the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. After college, Joe began a career in construction as a project manager that began at Scruggs Concrete Company for several years. He then moved to the Orlando Area and worked with Beers/Skanska Construction Company for several years before moving to the Atlanta area to work with MWC Construction. Most recently, he worked with Skin Path Solutions to support elderly and disabled veterans by assisting them with construction projects to improve their quality of life. Joe loved fishing, especially the flats of the Gulf of Mexico at Keaton Beach. He was a very giving person, who treated everyone like family. He would do anything for anyone and found his purpose in helping others. He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kelley Wetherington of Lake Park; two daughters and sons in law, Stephanie & Matt Dietzel of Covington, and Jennifer & Leo Kesselman of Detroit, MI; his mother, Vannie Wetherington of Keaton Beach, FL; his granddaughter, Damaris Dietzel of Covington; two brothers and sisters in law, Michael & Janet Wetherington of Sylvester, and Wesley & Marty Wetherington of Acworth. Also surviving are a niece and her husband, Sarah & Austin Wilson, and a nephew, Andrew Wetherington, all of Atlanta. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Wetherington.
The funeral for Joe will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at McLane Lakewood Funeral Home in Lake Park. Dr. Ken Alford will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Lake Park from 2 p.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wiregrass Foundation South Scholarship fund or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
