William Dean Anderson, 86, of Valdosta since 1946, died on Sunday, February 12, 2006 at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman. Born on February 19, 1919 in Statesboro, he was the son of the late William Dean and Blanche Crawford Anderson and the widower of Florence Scott Anderson who died in 1994.
He graduated from Statesboro High School and attended Georgia Southern College. Mr. Anderson was a veteran having served in the Army Air Force from 1942-1945 as a flight instructor training American and British pilots in Americus. He then transferred to Washington DC with Air Transport Command, transporting supplies, materials and troops to the northern route; Newfoundland, Scotland, Northern Africa and Casablanca.
During his career he worked with Commercial Credit, was a partner with the McCall Company and also worked for the Deeb Company. On March 31, 1984 he retired from the Langdale Company having worked as their corporate pilot and in their Human Resource Dept. as Industrial Relations Director for many years. He was an avid sportsman, loved fishing and hunting and was a great fan of the Valdosta Wildcats and a member of the Touchdown Club.
Survivors are his nephews and nieces and their spouses, Ed Jr. and Kathy Wade of Parrott, Danalyn L. and Edwin E. Akins of Stilson, Jan J. and Rev. Marcus Tripp of Macon; a number of great nieces and great nephews and a special friend, Lillian Manganaro of Valdosta. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Maridean A. Wade of Parrott, Evelyn A. Lee of Stilson and Blanche A. Joiner of Statesboro.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Mac Weaver and Rev. Marcus Tripp officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the donor’s charity of choice.
