Wiley Capers "Matt" Griffin, 81, of Milner passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital in Griffin, Georgia. He was born on October 18, 1929 in Brooks County to the late Turner and Mattie Lou Selph Griffin and was a Baptist, a retired truck driver with Ace Hardware and Kroger Grocery Stores. His favorite pastime was making up tall tales and the harder people laughed, the bigger the tale. Mr. Griffin loved hunting, fishing and riding horses and pretending to be John Wayne.
Survivors include his wife, Evangeline Cole Griffin of Milner, two daughters and a son in law, Wanda and Carlton Fowler, Connie Steger, his son, Turner Dean Griffin and his special friend Joni, special former son in law, Perry Steger, grandchildren, Jason (Laura) Steger, Bret (Jessie) Steger, Jacinda Lynn Bradford, Clayton Lee Fowler and his special friend, Jelane, two brothers, Steve Griffin and Herman Griffin, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Griffin Hanks and a brother, Q.T. (Doc) Griffin.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at the First Baptist Church at Orchard Hill in Griffin and a private graveside service was held at 11am, Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the Friendship Cemetery in Hahira. Memorials may be made in his memory to the First Baptist Church at Orchard Hill Building Fund, 205 Swint Road, Griffin, GA 30224.
