Morris Smith, 87, of Valdosta, died on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at South Georgia Medical Center. Ms. Smith was born in Valdosta to the late Mitchell Jones Smith, Sr. & Elsie Morris Smith, and had lived most of her life here. A graduate of Valdosta High School, Ms. Smith held degrees from Valdosta State College as well as Tulane University. She was a life-long educator as well as social worker that taught at Valdosta Junior High School for 14 years. She held residence in New Orleans, Louisiana for several years where she performed social work with the Orleans Parrish Schools and then later worked with the Lowndes County Schools. She also spent 7 years overseas teaching for the Department of Defense and spent over a year in Zambia as a volunteer helping with the construction and operation of a school. For the past several years she worked locally with the Snake Nation Press and the Valdosta Historical Society and had published several books. Ms. Smith was a member at Central Avenue Church of Christ.
Survivors include a brother and sister in law, Mitchell & Lota Smith of Valdosta, 7 nieces and nephews, Mickey Burns of Valdosta, Danny & Mary Burns of Hahira, Melissa & Peter Epps of Valdosta, Dale Burns of Valdosta, Dr. Chris & Brooke Hendry of Macon, Bruce and Cathie Smith of Valdosta and John Smith of Atlanta. She is preceded in death by her sister Margaret Smith Hendry and nephew Wayne Smith.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, June 15, 2015 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Mr. John Klimko will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00am until 11:00am on Monday, June 15, 2015. Flowers may be gifted or donations may be made to the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts or Central Avenue Church of Christ.
