Walter James White, Sr., 91, of Lake Park, died Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at South Georgia Medical Center. Born on March 29, 1917, in Massillon, Ohio, he was the son of the late Joseph Benjamin and Elsie Blanche Smith White. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in World War II. Mr. White was a member of First Baptist Church where he sang in the Senior Adult Choir and was a member of the Scrap Iron Sunday School Class. He recently went on one of the Honor Flights to Washington D.C. and he also enjoyed golfing until recent years. Mr. White was associated with G.C. Murphy Company for over 40 years and was a member of several Barber Shop Quartets.
He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patti and Bucky Barrett of Valdosta, Martha and Greg Simms of Mauldin, SC, Kay White of Columbia, SC; one son and daughter-in-law, Walter James "Jim", Jr. and Kathy White of Fayetteville, NC; four grandchildren, Rebecca White, Debbie White, Harmony White and Mary Lewis and one great granddaughter, Sara Marie Barrett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Louise White and two brothers, Joseph E. White and Harry White.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2008 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Phil West and Rev. Mac Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
