WALTER H. (BUD) ZORN, 90, of Valdosta died Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at South Georgia Medical Center after a short illness. He was born on September 21, 1917 in Shorterville, Alabama to the late Adolphus H. and Annie Lou Zorn. He was baptized at the Bainbridge Christian Church in 1957. He played the fiddle for eighty-two years after starting at the age of 8. Mr. Zorn began several acoustic bluegrass bands around Alabama and mainly in Georgia. He was nominated by Mike Daugharty to be inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame and was inducted in November, 2004. Dr. Laurie Sommers, a professor of music at Valdosta State University documented Mr. Zorn's life story and is currently touring the country with a display of his life to tell the story of the development of old time country music.
Survivors include his daughter, Glenda Zorn of Valdosta, son and daughter in law, Dr. Walt and Carolyn Zorn of Lincoln, Illinois, grandchildren and their spouses, Teresa and Steve Horn of Eatonton, Ga., Sandi and Ed Gourley of White Plains, Ga., Angela and Darin Bennett of Crestwood, Kentucky and Scott and Kerri Zorn of Tuscola, Illinois, 11-great grandchildren, 8-great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice M. Zorn, three sisters and two brothers.
Graveside services will be held at 2pm, Friday, April 4, 2008 at Riverview Memorial Gardens with Dr. Walt Zorn officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
