Walter Arthur Lawry

Walter Arthur Lawry, 90 of Evans, Georgia and formerly of Valdosta died on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at his residence in Evans, Georgia. He was born in Valdosta on April 20, 1926 to the late Dr. Arthur A. and Jeanette Everett Lawry. He graduated from Gordon Military School and served in the United States Navy during WWII. Following his discharge from the Navy, he attended Mercer University graduating with a BS degree and with a commission in the United States Army. His service included tours of duty in Germany, Taiwan, and Thailand and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel after 20 years of honorable service to his country. After retirement, he returned to his home in Valdosta and served as the Senior Army Instructor in the Junior ROTC program at Hamilton County High School in Jasper, Florida.

Lt Col Lawry is survived by his wife of 70 years, Cameron Knight Lawry of Evans, Georgia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Camie and Doug Braendel of Everett, Pennsylvania, and Jennifer and Ken Newlin of Cincinnati, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Jane Lawry; 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Janis Lawry McGraw, his son, Arthur A. Lawry, and his great-grandson, Jacob Miller.

A graveside service for Lt Col Walter Arthur Lawry will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Minister Joe Batluck officiating.
