Vivian Lorraine Hollenbeck

August 11, 1916 — May 19, 2013

Vivian Lorraine Hollenbeck, 96, of Valdosta, died at Heritage Healthcare on Sunday, May 19, 2013 after brief illness. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 11, 1916, she was the daughter, of the late Goldie and Peter Buickema. She received her Teacher's Certificate in Chicago. Mrs. Hollenbeck and her husband, James, served with Africa Inland Mission in Kenya, E. Africa for 11 years. She taught Home Economics and English and also ran the kitchen and laundry at Rift Valley Academy, a Christian boarding school for missionary children. Mrs. Hollenbeck moved from New York in 1977 to Valdosta. She was a volunteer with Bible Clubs in New York and Valdosta, the Mailbox Club being her passion for a number of years. Mrs. Hollenbeck assisted with the reading program at S.L. Mason Elementary School, and volunteered as a teacher for English as a Second Language. She was a passionate Bible teacher and student of the Word. A member of Crossroads Baptist Church, she taught the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class until her 95th birthday.
Mrs. Hollenbeck was married to the late James Hollenbeck, for 56 years. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Bob and JoAnne Hollenbeck of Valdosta; her daughters and sons in law, Lois June and Rob Campaan of Pageland, South Carolina, Ruthie and Ron Durie of Waxhaw, North Carolina, Debby and Jerry Tickner of Newnan; ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren; a sister, Lois Schrock of California. In addition to her husband, she is also preceded in death by a sister, Mavis Blake.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dr. Ken Alford and Reverend Charlie Scarbrough will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Mailbox Bible Club, 404 Eager Road, Valdosta GA 31602.
