Virginia Saunders Pitts

April 18, 1920 — April 17, 2013

Virginia Saunders Pitts, 92, of Valdosta, died at her home on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, after a period of declining health. Born in Reynolds, Georgia, on April 18, 1920, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas (Tom) and Mattie Lou Byrd Saunders. Virginia graduated from Reynolds High School and was a graduate of Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville. She worked for Birdsey Flour and Seed Company in Macon where in 1948 she met her future husband, Donald Earl Pitts. They were married in Reynolds. The family was transferred to Valdosta by Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1953. During the 1960's Virginia was a secretary at Sallas-Mahone Elementary School. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Christian Homebuilders Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women. Quiet and strong, Virginia was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker.
Survivors are her daughters and sons-in-law: Karen and Steve Bishop of Valdosta and Donna and Dana Bradford of Jacksonville, Florida; sister, Jane Saunders Pate of Sandersville, Georgia; grandchildren: Ginger (Chris) Dempsey of Christiansburg, Virginia, Andy (Bonnie) Bishop of Valdosta and Shannon Bradford of Jacksonville; step grandchild, Jeff (Andi) Bradford of Cary, North Carolina; great grandchildren: Sarah Bishop and Jack Bishop of Valdosta, and Molly Dempsey and Gretchen Dempsey of Christiansburg, Virginia; step great grandchildren: Riley Bradford, Zoe Bradford and Ellie Bradford of Cary, North Carolina; and special caregivers: Pam and Johnny Gary and Mary Ann Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Mausoleum at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Reverend Bob Moon will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Mausoleum prior to the service from 1 p.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 109 W.
