Virginia G. Sparkman

February 5, 1925 — March 3, 2008

Virginia G. Sparkman, 83, of Valdosta, passed away Monday, March 3, 2008 after a long illness. Born February 5, 1925 in Thomasville, she was preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn and Lovick Green, her husband, Joe Sparkman and her sister, Martha Martin. She is survived by daughters, Suzy Hall of Valdosta and Cathy Burns (Dan) of Oviedo, FL, two grandsons, Austin Hall of Valdosta and Scott Burns, who is a senior at the University of Miami. She is also survived by her special friend and cohort, Phillis Mabry.

Virginia grew up in St. Petersburg, FL and graduated from Florida State College for Women in the last class before it became FSU and a coed university. She majored in Speech with a minor in Drama. Virginia was married for almost 50 years to Joe Sparkman, with whom she shared her interests in gardening, dogs, church, and family. In her earlier days she was an active member of the Christian Homebuilders' Sunday School Class and the UMW at First United Methodist Church in Valdosta. She very enjoyed hosting her church circle meetings at her home. Her passion was flowers and gardening her hobby. She was very active in the Camellia Garden Club of Valdosta including serving as past president of the local garden clubs. She was actively involved in previous renovations of The Crescent and volunteered many hours there as well as serving as a Pink Lady at South Georgia Medical Center for a number of years.

Graveside services will be held at 1 P.M. Friday, March 7, 2008 at Riverview Memorial Gardens with Rev. Thomas Mason, Jr. officiating. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 305-1 University Dr, Valdosta, GA, 31602; The Humane Society, P.O. Box 5323, Valdosta, GA 31603; The First United Methodist Church, 220 N. Patterson St., Valdosta, 31601 or a charity of your choice.
