Virgil Clyde Mccrary

November 3, 1927 — November 17, 2015

On November 17, 2015, Virgil Clyde McCrary, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, stepped into eternity. His passing was preceded by a lengthy illness. Born in Pinehurst, GA on November 3, 1927 to Thomas Felton and Carrie Mae Dowis McCrary, he spent much of his childhood and early adulthood in Sparks, GA. After serving a term in the United States Army at the end of World War II, Virgil returned to Cook County to marry his lifetime love and sweetheart, Jacqueline Lou Tyson. In 1952, the couple moved to Valdosta where they settled to raise a family and Virgil began a career with Foremost Dairies. As a faithful member of Northside Baptist Church, he served many years on the active Board of Deacons as well as chairing and participating in numerous committees. Other than caring for his family, Virgil felt his greatest calling was ministering to others. He was faithful in visiting the sick and caring for those who were grieving. His quick smile and sparkling blue eyes served as comfort to many friends and family during times of need.
Virgil is survived by his wife and best friend of 68 years, Jackie Tyson McCrary; one son, Donald Paul McCrary and wife, Linda, of Valdosta; one daughter, Judith Gail McCrary Painter and husband, E. C., of Savannah. He is pre-deceased by an infant daughter. Other survivors include three grandsons, Ryan Justin McCrary and wife, Courtney, Donald Brett McCrary, and Evan Charles Painter; one sister and brother in law, Glenda and Elbert Futch of Valdosta; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charles and Polly Tyson of Bainbridge, Jean Phillips of Shalimar, FL, Shirley Dyer of Valdosta, Billy and Mickie Tyson of Sparks, Polly and George Talley of Valdosta and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by two brothers and sisters in law, Guy and Robbie McCrary, Billy and Lois McCrary, two sisters and brothers in law, Jewell and James Templeton, Joyce and John Williams.
A celebration of Virgil's life will be held on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 2pm at the Northside Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Willis officiating. Burial will follow in the Sparks Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5-7pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in Virgil's name to the Northside Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 E. Park Ave., Valdosta, GA 31602 or to the charity of your choice.
