Violet Stewardson Mathis

Violet Stewardson Mathis, 87, of Naylor, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. She was born on February 7, 1924 in Richmond, Virginia to the late Harry Folsom and Mary Elizabeth Childress Stewardson and had lived in Miami, Florida for many years before moving to Lowndes County in 1995. Mrs. Mathis was a member of the Pleasant Way Baptist Church and was very involved in her church activities. She loved gardening, tending her flowers, pecan trees and feeding birds. Mrs. Mathis enjoyed spending time with her family with her children as her top priority.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Ward and Carol Mathis of North Granby, CT., Wanda and Al Clary of Fairview, TX., Wilma and Bud O'Dell of Naylor, Matt and Iesa Mathis of Florida, Van Mathis of Rockwall, TX., 11-grandchildren, Rebecca Bollam, Diana Sama, Chad Clary, Gavin Clary, Matt O'Dell, Sara O'Dell, Anthony Mathis, Jeff Johnson, Nicholas Mathis, Megan Mathis Rodriquez and Daria Tracey, one great grandson, William Owen Bollam, one brother and sister in law, Jimmy and Jesse Stewardson of Rockville, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie James Mathis and a brother, Bobby Stewardson.

Funeral services will be held at 1pm, Saturday, June 18, 2011 at the Pleasant Way Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Watson officiating. Burial will follow at 4pm at the Zion Hope Cemetery in Cordele. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
