Vernon Owen Stalvey, 77, of Ray City died Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at South Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born on September 3, 1929 in Lowndes County to the late John J. and Ellen Jane Cowart Stalvey. Mr. Stalvey was a member of the Cat Creek Primitive Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Air Force having served in Korea. After his time in the service he was a farmer and owned and operated the Barretts Grocey Store in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Mr. Stalvey retired as a chemical engineer having worked for Union Camp in Valdosta and Westvaco in Lake City, Florida and De Ridder, Louisiana. He loved fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Numa Stalvey of Ray City, three daughters and sons in law, Judy and Edward Garcia of Jacksonville, Fla., Jackie and Trent Housley of Oklahoma City, OK., Cindy and Sam Crews of Douglasville, GA., two sisters Leila Moore of Ray City and Ruth Gerregano of MacClenny, Fla., two brothers and sisters in law, Leland and Margaret Stalvey of Ray City and Arlie and Jane Stalvey of Orlando, Fla., 13-grandchildren, 20-great grandchildren, 1-great great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Roseanna Bertsch, a great grandson, Paul Edward Garcia and seven brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Saturday, August 25, 2007 at the Cat Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Jim Sandlin and Elder Thad Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in the Cat Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
