VERNON LIGHTSEY, 79, of Lake Park, passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2008. He was born June 13, 1929 in Echols County, a son of the late Jessie and Callie Vann Lightsey. Farming was his life and he loved it very much.
Mr. Lightsey was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church of Christ and of the Statenville Masonic Lodge #209 for over 25 years. For 39 years he had served as President of the Echols County Farm Bureau. He loved the Lord and his fellow man. He enjoyed his family and friends, serving the community, and cooking for friends, church and the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife Joann C. Lightsey of Lake Park; one daughter, Marsha Copeland of Augusta; two sons, Ronny Lightsey and his wife Valiree of Lake Park, and Ricky Lightsey and his wife Gaye of Lake Park; six grandchildren, Shannon Copeland and his wife Anna of Atlanta, Chris Copeland and his wife Darby of Aiken, SC, Brigitte Russell and husband Corey of Valdosta, Justin Lightsey and his wife Keri of Valdosta, Brooke Lightsey of Bradenton, FL, and Lance Lightsey and his wife Heather of Lake Park; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Smith of Homerville, and Dorothy Bostic and her husband John of Valdosta.
Services will be held at 2 pm Thursday, October 23, 2008 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Jerry Via and Charles Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Carter Cemetery at Sardis Baptist Church where Masonic Rites will be conducted. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
