Velma Laverne Tucker Tyler

December 16, 1931 — February 13, 2018

Velma LaVerne Tucker Tyler, 86, of Hahira passed away peacefully Tuesday morning on February 13, 2018 after her long battle with dementia at the home of her caretakers, her daughter and son in law, Judy and John Pike of Hahira. Miss Velma will always be remembered for her many years of service as a Lowndes County school bus driver in the Salem Community before her route was changed to the Friendship area of Hahira. This was a job that she truly loved. She is especially known for her faithful service and dedication to TOPS, a national weight loss support group. After many years of membership in the Valdosta Chapter 38 and Valdosta Chapter 190, Miss Velma started the local Hahira Chapter 349. She was quite the talk of the town after losing and keeping of 100 lbs. She would happily share her weight loss story with anyone and encouraged anyone she met to join her group.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Mildred (Durden) Tucker; her husband, Carol C. Tyler; an infant daughter, Janie Tyler; a granddaughter, Julie Tyler; a sister and brother in law, Dorothy (Tucker) and Bill Weldon; a sister in law and her husband, Delores (Tyler) and Edwin Wilkerson; two brothers in law, Bobby Fiveash and CJ “Dorian” King and two special lifelong friends, Henrietta Thompson and Mary Jo Williams.
In addition to Judy and John, she is also survived by a son and daughter in law, Jimmy and Susan (Harris) Tyler; a daughter, Amy Tyler (Roger Williams) all of Hahira; along with seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, Jennifer (Sean) Strickland and their son, Logan; Libby Carey and her son, Noah Perdue; Kim (Joey) Spivey and their children, Madison Crews, Holly and Julianna Spivey; Emily Pike (Jared Webster); Ashley (Lila) Parrish and their son, Michael; Sarah (Ray) Gillis and their children, Fiona Ramos and Victor Gillis; Dana Brown (Justin Purvis) and their children, Jacob and Lacey Brown; also surviving are a sister, Catherine King; three brothers and sisters in law, Gene and Verna Tucker, John and Christine Tucker, Raymond and Charlene Tucker; a sister in law, Sue Tyler Fiveash and special lifelong friend, Louelle Barfield along with many many beloved nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 3pm, Friday, February 16, 2018 at Friendship Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-8pm at the Martin/McLane Funeral Home of Hahira. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local animal shelter dedicated to the spaying and neutering of pets for low income families. Miss Velma did love her kitties and dogs.
