VaNelle Kendall Anderson of Valdosta died on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the Langdale Hospice after several years of declining health. A native Valdostan, daughter of Clyde Bolton and William Pinckney Kendall. After attending Valdosta City Schools, she graduated from VHS in 1932. She received a Bachelor's degree from Georgia State Women's College (now VSU) in 1936; she later earned a Master's degree from the same institution (then VSC).
A retried schoolteacher, Mrs. Anderson began her career at Pine Grove Elementary School. She later taught at schools in Arlington, VA., as well as in Jacksonville and Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Most of the thirty years of her teaching career were spent in the Valdosta and Lowndes County school systems, at both elementary and secondary levels. She was a member of the local chapter of the Retried Teachers Association, as well as of Book Review. Her earliest memories of the Cradle Roll class at First United Methodist Church, Valodsta, where she was a longtime member. She was actively involved in the programs of the church, having taught youth Sunday School, as well as having been a member of the Annie Mae Walker class, where she served several terms as either president of treasurer.
Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Perry LeConte Anderson; their daughter, Virginia Lamar Anderson Moseman; one brother, Lt. William P. Kendall, Jr.; one sister, Clyde Kendall Lester; one nephew, Ken Altman; and her brothers in law, James D. Lester and Walter G. Altman, Jr.
Survivors include her sister, Lamar Kendall Altman of Valdosta, brother and sister in law, S. Riley, Sr. and Ella M. Kendall, her nieces and their spouses, Jadan A. and Ronnie Pitcock, Edie K. and Doug Robertson and Mary Beth Altman; nephews and their spouses, Walter G., III and Jackie Altman, William R. and Jennifer Altman, William P. and Nanci Kendall, S. Riley Kendall, Jr. and Stephen P. Kendall; thirteen great nieces and nephews, fifteen great great nieces and nephews; as well as several cousins and their families. Her extended family was a very well loved part of her life, along with many special friends.
Mrs. Anderson was lovingly cared for by many assistants, as well as by Langdale Place and Langdale Hospice. Her family expressed deep appreciation to all who were involved in her care throughout the past several years.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Sunday, March 29, 2009 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Mason officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1pm until service time at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or to the Virginia Anderson Moseman Scholarship at Valdosta State University.
