Turner Morgan Hiers, 98 of Valdosta, died on Monday, Feburary 19, 2007, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman after a period of declining health. Born on February 2, 1909, in Brooks County, he was the son of the late John Morgan and Emma Mosely Hiers. He graduated from Pavo High School, and after studying journalism at the University of Georgia, he joined the staff of the Atlanta Constitution, where he covered political campaigns throughout the state.
A veteran of World War II, Turner Hiers served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp as one of four editors of combat photography in the European Theater. His assignments in London and Paris included liaison work for the Office of Strategic Services.
He established his own photography studio in Atlanta after the war. In 1951, he began a long career at Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company, Georgia. A public relations photographer and assistant editor of Lockheed’s Southern Star, he traveled worldwide on special assignments for Lockheed, including trips to Japan, Korea, South America and almost every Western European country. His photos for Lockheed often graced the covers and pages of major aviation periodicals. After retiring, he did volunteer work for the Cobb County Heart Association and United Way.
Survivors are his sister-in-law, Dr. Margaret Hiers, Valdosta; nephews, Emory Mitchell Hiers, Jr. (Linda) Moultrie, Dr. John T. Hiers (Phyllis), and Alfred A. Hiers (Kay), all of Valdosta, and Emily Jean Thomas, Tuscaloosa, AL; 14 great nieces and nephews; 22 great-great nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Sherry Popwell. He was preceded in death by his brother, Emory M. Hiers, Sr.
Memorial services will be 4:00 p.m., Monday, February 26, 2007, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. Alfred Hiers and Reverend Charlie Scarborough officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Charity, 1171 Power Springs Rd., NW, Marietta, GA 30064.
