Tom Bush Smith, Jr., 78, of Valdosta died Tuesday October 1, 2013 at Langdale Hospice House. He was born in Valdosta to the late Tom Bush, Sr. & Alberta Smith on November 14, 1934, he was a lifelong resident of this area. Mr. Smith graduated from Valdosta High School in the early 1950's, having played football for the Wildcats during those years. In the mid 1950's, he married his childhood sweetheart Patricia Ann. They would be married for nearly 57 years prior to her death this past June. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a Pharmacy degree, the Smiths returned home for Tom Bush to join his father as a pharmacist at Smith Walgreen Pharmacy in the late 1950's. His career as a pharmacist would span over 50 years, also working at the Pick 'n Save pharmacy for many years and more recently at Hogans Pharmacy and The Medicine Shoppe. Mr. Smith was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldog Football Team and he also enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and very active as a Gideon. Mr. Smith was a true southern gentleman, engaging everyone he met with kindness, respect and humor.
Survivors include his son, Tom Bush Smith, III, four grandchildren, Tom Bush Smith, IV and wife, Sarah of Ormond Beach, FL, Trinity Nell Sumner, Chance M. Smith, Patricia Ann Sumner all of Valdosta, four great grandchildren, Lilyana Lynn Smith, Gabrielle Grace Smith, Burkeley Bush Smith, Chrisily Cate Smith all of Ormond Beach, FL and a brother and sister in law, Marcus & Anna Lee Smith of Baton Rouge, LA., and a wide extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Carroll Smith, a daughter, Ginny Smith Sumner and a son in law, Trent Roger Sumner.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11am, Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Rev. Bob Moon will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday morning from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. prior to the service.
