Thomas (Tom) Alton Culpepper, 74, of Valdosta died Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Select Specialty Hospital in Tallahassee, Florida after a brief illness. He was born on December 26, 1936 in Echols County to the late James Gordon and Flossie Corbett Culpepper and was a lifelong resident of Echols and Lowndes Counties. Mr. Culpepper was a member of the Westside Baptist Church and retired from Owens-Illinois Bag Plant Division, Bayliner and currently working with Cowart and Sons. He was a 1955 graduate of Echols County High School and was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served from 1959-1962 in Texas and Wheelis Air Force Base in Tripoli, Africa. He loved to hunt, fish and work in his yard and spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Culpepper was an avid Lowndes High Viking Football Fan and had played baseball with the Twin River League in the 1960's and had coached football and baseball at the Boys Club.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Faye Cowart Culpepper of Valdosta, son and daughter in law, Jeff and Sandra Culpepper of Hahira, daughter and son in law, Lori and Dick Campbell of Valdosta, his grandchildren, Jay Culpepper, Andrew Culpepper, Kaley Culpepper, Emma Campbell and Lilly Kate Campbell, two brothers and sisters in law, Walter (Dub) and Regina Culpepper, Clifford (Tip) and Annie Laura Culpepper all of Valdosta, cousins, Becky Neese, Sara Coggins and David Corbett all of Lake Park, his mother in law, Montez (Susie) Faucette of Adel, sister in law, Joyce Calvert of Spartanburg, SC., brother in law, Carroll Cowart of Adel, nieces and nephews, Kay Watson, Benny Culpepper, Roger Culpepper, Susie Tighe, Alan Culpepper, Angie Wills and Vicky Hayes, numerous other nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father in law, J. B. Cowart, niece, Cindy Auker, and sister in law and brother in law, Lucille and Jerome Register.
Funeral services will be held at 4pm, Sunday, March 13, 2011 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Ernie Jones and Dr. Clyde Stokes officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendship Cemetery in Hahira. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
