Thomas Roy Henderson, long-time resident of Sandy Springs, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2012. Born in Detroit on June 21, 1918 to the late Irene and Ross James Henderson, Mr. Henderson's family moved to Atlanta when he was just 8 months old, Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, the former Mary Theron Roberts of Valdosta.
Mr. Henderson is survived by his daughters Janet Henderson Winton, her husband, William of Johns Creek and Joan Henderson Nolte of West Palm Beach. Surviving also are step-grandson Dr. Wil Winton, his wife Yvette and their sons Tyler and Garrett of Johns Creek. Also surviving are his brother James Ross Henderson, Sr., nephew Edward Ross Henderson, great-nephew Grayson and nephew James Ross Henderson, Jr., his wife Dr. Dana Henderson, great-nephew Andrew and his wife, Kathleen. Phoebe McCoy, dear friend of Mr. Henderson and the family, also survives him. Mr. Henderson is predeceased by his sister in law, Edith Harrison Henderson and son-in-law, Brian Nolte.
An Atlanta Tech High alum, Mr. Henderson attended Georgia Tech before entering the Army in 1943 for World War II. He graduated from Officer Candidate School (OCS) and served in the Army Corps of Engineers directing the construction of airfields in North Africa, Greece, England and Italy. Upon returning, he worked for AT&T, owned a contracting company and later found his calling in education. Mr. Henderson graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS in Education and also received a Master's in Education from Georgia State University. He retired in 1997 after 30 years as an educator and Media Specialist with DeKalb Technical College. A skilled photographer, Mr. Henderson was also an avid tennis player, enjoyed sculpture classes at the Benson Senior Center, was a charter member of the Sandy Springs Historical Society and a lifetime member of the Lowndes County Historical Society. In recent years, Mr. Henderson resided at the Sunrise Assisted Living at Huntcliff. On his behalf the family would like to thank the staff and residents for their love and support.
Viewing will be on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328 with a memorial service following at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery on Thursday, March 1 at 1:00 p.m. in Valdosta, GA with Military Honors.
