Thomas Lawton (Tom) Gregory, Jr., 78, of Valdosta, went home to be with his Lord Jesus on Sunday, June 4, 2017. Tom was born March 6th, 1939 in Murphy, North Carolina to the late Georgie Whitfield Gregory and Thomas Lawton Gregory, Sr. He has lived in Valdosta since 1972. Tom attended Virginia Tech for undergraduate and graduate school and worked as an architect for over 50 years, ultimately specializing in designing churches world-wide. However, that's not what people remember most about him; it was his genuine love for people. No matter what he was doing each day, he was always looking for an opportunity to love, encourage and speak about his faith to whoever crossed his path. Just the sight of Tom would lift the spirits of everyone he worked with and the people he served. He is known for his very humble manner, his immense love for each person he meets, and his unique ability to show each person they are of great importance. As an architect and designer, Tom was constantly in amazement over the incredible design and intricacy of God's creation. He is best known for his very special flower, which he drew for anyone with whom he came in contact. His purpose was to glorify Christ in whatever he did, and his life reflected a heart committed to Christ. His ministries included serving as elder in his church, Covenant Baptist Church, as well as serving on the board of Faith Ventures in Fellowship Valley, Georgia. Tom also served on the board of Pennfield Christian Homes, a ministry to men overcoming addiction to drugs and alcohol and was involved in the ministry of The Mailbox Club of Valdosta, GA, which is an evangelistic ministry started by the late George Eager of Valdosta. His heart was centered the most around his family; his wife, children and grandchildren and the time he spent with them.
Survivors include his wife, Cherie Gregory, his sister, Mary Widick (Leland), his children and their spouses, Lisa Miller (Mark) of Olive Branch, MS, Laurie Robbins Dempsey (George) of Roswell, GA, Stacey Ireland and husband (Mark) of Valdosta, Kimberly Robbins of Athens, GA, and Chase Gregory (Ailis) of Hahira. Tom's beloved 11 grandchildren include Matthew Miller, Logan Ireland, Emily Miller, Chelley Ireland, Elena Gregory, Carly Miller, Greysen Dempsey, Hardin Gregory, Millie Dempsey, Jenna Gregory, and Sara Gregory. He is preceded in death by a brother George Gregory.
The funeral for Tom will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Covenant Baptist Church. Pastor David Cummings and Pastor Bill Davenport will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 5 until 7 pm, June 7, 2017.
