Thomas Harding Smith, Jr., M.D., 81, of Valdosta, died at St. Simons Island, Georgia on
Sunday, January 31, 2010. Born August 4, 1928 in Valdosta, Dr. Smith was the son of
the late Thomas Harding Smith, Sr. and Corinne Briggs Smith. He attended public
schools in Valdosta, continuing his education with a BA Degree from Emory University
in 1949 and his M.D. Degree from Emory University School of Medicine in 1954.
Following medical internship at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, he served in the
United States Navy Medical Corp., then completed his post graduate medical training in
Ophthalmology at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in New York, New York.

Dr. Smith practiced Ophthalmology in Valdosta from 1961 until his retirement in 1998.
He was an active member of the medical staff of South Georgia Medical Center and held
memberships with the South Georgia Medical Society, Georgia Society of
Ophthalmology, Medical Association of Georgia and the American Medical Association.

Tom was passionate for his family and extended family. His undying love for Valdosta,
continued from past generations, served as his foundation for giving back to the
community. He graciously served the First Presbyterian Church, was an active
participant on many corporate boards, and dedicated a life of leadership to the Rotary
Club. Tom was an avid Braves fan. He enjoyed gardening his azaleas and working
around his yard. He truly cherished his time with wife Harriet and his children, time often
spent on St. Simons Island.

Survivors are his wife, Harriet Thompson Smith of Valdosta, formerly of Prouts Neck,
Maine; three children, Jennifer Stuart Smith of St. Simons Island, Georgia, T. Harding
Smith III, M.D. of Evans, GA. with his wife Elizabeth and son Justin, Ross Winfield
Smith of Charlotte, NC with his wife Kelly and daughters Hattie and Ella; sister, Julia
Bess Scott of Valdosta; brother, H. Briggs Smith, M.D. and wife Lane of Valdosta;
brother-in-law, Reverend Robert McGehee of Decatur, AL. Dr. Smith was preceded in
death by sisters, Georgia Smith Thomson and Corinne Smith McGehee.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel
of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend John Akers will officiate. Burial will
follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane
Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be
made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a favorite charity of
