Theodora Gandy

January 13, 1920 — February 18, 2023

Theodora "Theda" Nettles Gandy, still remarkable at 103 years old, passed away peacefully Sunday evening. Theda was best known in the community as a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church of Valdosta, and through Valdosta State University. From 1971, when the Gandy family moved from Berry College near Rome, Georgia, Theda plunged into an endless pursuit of community service, with emphasis on church, international missions, VSU, nature study, creative arts, and women's leadership.

Originally from Monroe County, Alabama, Theda graduated from Berry College in 1943, where she met Tom Gandy: the "other half" of her proclaimed purpose-driven life. After graduate work for Theda and Tom at University of Illinois, they settled first at Auburn University, where Tom taught for twelve years; and returned to Berry College, with Tom named Vice President, in 1963.

Theda assumed leadership in most organizations of which she was a member, including: American Association of University Women; President, United Methodist Women of Valdosta District; Delegate to National Congress of United Methodist Women (UMW); Valdosta Garden Club; Valdosta District Council on Ministries; President, Valdosta State College Woman's Club; Executive Board of League of Women's Voters; Women's Society of Christian Service; and Valdosta Entertainment Association.

Theda and Tom seized retirement with their characteristic zest, with First Methodist-sponsored mission trips to the Philippines, where they were part of a lively mission team, who after over eight trips, built a fellowship hall for the church. They intentionally visited all fifty states and every national park, between European excursions and cruises—many of which with Valdosta friends.

Theda is survived by her many friends, her daughter Suzanne; adoring grandchildren, Anna Hornsby, Christian Akers, and grandson-in-law Warner Hornsby; dear sister and best friend, Elizabeth Lauderdale; and her amazing friend and caregiver, Loreece Andrews; numerous nieces and nephews, including Robert Gandy and Jennifer Greer, faithfully visited her during her past two years at Langdale Place. The family is supremely grateful for the care and genuine love offered by the staff of Langdale Place.

A memorial service will be held this Friday, February 24th, 11 am, at First United Methodist Church, with visitation 30 minutes before the service.
