Thelma Lee O'Neal Grant

Thelma Lee O'Neal Grant, lifetime resident of Valdosta, passed away at the age of 103, on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at the Heritage House. Born in Valdosta on December 30, 1905, she was the oldest child of the late John Robert and Maude McLeod O'Neal. Mrs. Grant was Salutatorian of the Class of 1925 at Valdosta High School. She was the oldest member of the Central Avenue Church of Christ. She was a very active member of the church, having made two mission trips to New Zealand in the 1970's.

Survivors are her daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and David Young of Chipley, Florida, Virginia and Frank Polhill of Clewiston, Florida, Martha Jean and Wilbur Copeland of Valdosta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Carlyen Grant of Perry, Florida, O'Neal and Faye Grant of Valdosta; daughters-in-law, Tootsie Allen Grant of Naylor, Susan Grant Jackson of Valdosta; brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and June O'Neal of Valdosta; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lena Bennett of Jacksonville, Florida, Emily and Cleo Teagle of Warner Robins, Mattie Lou Schroer of Marietta; sister-in-law, Glenn Ann O'Neal of Athens; 21 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Eugene Grant, sons, Charles Grant, Billy Grant, and Bobby Grant, sisters, Carrie O'Neal Willis, Margaret O'Neal Fredricks, and Mary Clyde O'Neal, brothers, John R. O'Neal, Jr., Charles O'Neal, Lonnie O'Neal, and Earl O'Neal.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2009, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Mr. Bryan Jarvis, Mr. David Nelson and Mr. John Klimko will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
