Thelma Boyd Shockley

Thelma Boyd Shockley, 89, of Valdosta, died Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Langdale Hospice House following a lengthy illness. She was born July 17, 1926, in Greenville, SC. to the late Oscar and Sarah Upchurch, she was adopted by the late Joseph T. and Myrtle Cate Boyd in Chattanooga, TN. She was baptized at Northside Church of Christ in Chattanooga as a teenager, was a daily bible reader and a Bible class teacher for most of her adult life. She was a teacher with Chattanooga Bible School (now Boyd Buchannan School) and the Walker County Board of Education. She was also a member of Forrest Park Church of Christ.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda S. and Bill Ward of Valdosta, her daughter in law, Judy Shockley of Memphis, TN, five grandchildren, Christie Beddow (Peter) of Nashville, TN, Phillip Shockley of Memphis, TN, Timothy Ward of Olive Branch, MS, Katie Quintero (Alex) of Columbia, TN and Kyla Ward of Valdosta, one great grandchild, Lenora Quintero of Columbia, TN, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Thomas William Shockley, son David Shockley, and three brothers, Charles Upchurch, Robert Upchurch, and Lewis Upchurch.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at seven p. m. at Forrest Park Church of Christ with Mr. Bill Ward and Mr. Westley Hazel officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening beginning at 6 p. m.at the church. Graveside services and burial will be at Forrest Hill Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN, Thursday, May 12, 2016, at 2:00 p. m.
