Ernestine (Tena) Coats Carter, 90, of Valdosta passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at her home. She was born on September 21, 1925 in Epps, Louisiana to the late Albert and Eva Coats and had lived in Valdosta since 1964. Mrs. Carter was a member of the Northside Baptist Church where she had served on numerous committees. She was a retired teacher with Valdosta City School System having taught for thirty six years.
Survivors include two sons and daughter in law, Kenneth Carter of Jacksonville, FL, Ernest and Donna Carter of Tifton, GA; her grandson, James Rouse Carter and his mother, Laurene Carter both of Valdosta; her sister, Betty Davis of Little Rock, AR; nieces and nephews, Ray and Barbara Coats of Tallahassee, FL, Kay and Harley Rich of Port St. Joe, FL, Cynthia Coats of Valdosta, Birdie Mae Hackney of Fountain Hill, AR; numerous other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; four adopted sons, Brant Waller, Eddie Lee, Mike Layton and Dewey Lee. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Carter; five brothers and three sisters, a niece, Janice Coats Lewis, a nephew, Warren Coats and one adopted son, Steve Verbecke.
Funeral services will be held ata 1pm, Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Northside Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Willis officiating. Burial will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6-8pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Northside Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 E.
