Talley C. Mathis, Army Ret. SFC, (Big Papa), 77, of Hahira, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on June 12, 1927 in Berrien County, GA to the late Talley C. Mathis, Sr. and Maude E. Devane Mathis. Mr. Mathis was retired from the United States Army having served from 1945 until 1965. He was a retired bookkeeper with Autry Petroleum, was a member of the American Legion, a member of the Hahira First Baptist Church and was a deacon.
Mr. Mathis is survived by his wife, Mary McDonald Mathis of Hahira, two daughters and one son in law, Hope and Louie Roe and Dawn Panter of Hahira, one son, Craig Mathis of Columbus, GA, grandchildren, Charity and Brian Carpenter, Chad and Melissa Roe, Brad and Missy Roe, Erin and Ed Freshwater, Ryan and Candee Panter, great grandchildren, Austin, Ethan, Chance, Destiny, Daycee, Lexie and Brittany, three sisters, Eloise Hargraves, Marjorie Croft, Emily Sue Smith, three brothers, Elwood E. Mathis, Julian W. Mathis and Earl Mathis.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 2, 2005 at two p. m. at the Martin McLane Funeral Home in Hahira. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery.
