Sydney Hartnig, 92, born September 20, 1919 to Sol and Gertrude Hartnig in Bridgeport, Connecticut, died Saturday, October 29, 2011 in Valdosta, GA. The dapper marine met his bride of 66 years, Lottie, in Jacksonville, NC while stationed at Camp Lejune. Lottie and Sydney started their family in Fairfield, CT and then moved to Cordele, GA, West Point, GA and Salisbury, NC before settling in Valdosta. Sydney loved life, dancing and service to his synagogue and community. The game of golf was his passion. He especially enjoyed encouraging youth to enjoy the game. Sydney spent the last two years of his life living at Langdale Place and Heritage Healthcare at Lake Haven.
He is survived by his wife, Lottie Hartnig of Valdosta and their three children, Maxine Small of Loganville, GA, Lynda Hartnig of Tallahassee, FL and Richard Hartnig and his wife, Fern of Alpharetta, GA and two granddaughters, Sarah Hartnig of Miami, FL and Alissa Hartnig of Alpharetta, GA, one sister, Ida Kaplan of New Haven, CT and one brother, Ralph Hartnig of Tamarac, FL.
Graveside funeral services will be held Sunday, October 30, 2011 at two p. m. at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Rabbi Moshe Elbaz officiating. Burial will follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Temple Israel, 511 Baytree Road, Valdosta, GA 31602. Condolences to the family may be expressed online at www.mclanecares.com.
