Stuart Scruggs, 90, of Valdosta, died on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Langdale Hospice House after a very brief illness. Born in Naylor to the late Annie Julia Hood Scruggs and Lyle Scruggs, he grew up in Naylor and then attended and graduated from Valdosta High School. While he was in high school, Mr. Scruggs started working at Vinson's Drug Store in downtown Valdosta as a soda jerk. Not long after graduating, he went to work at Irvin's Men's Clothing Store in the mid 1940's. He worked for Mr. Cohen at Irvins for 20 years before purchasing the store in the mid 1960's. He continued his career in men's clothing before retiring and selling his business in 1990. During his 44-year career, he could recall the inseam, waist measurements and jacket size of all his regular customers and kept his motto "the customer is always right". After his retirement, he began driving to pick up and deliver cars for auto dealerships. Soon, he began driving to deliver cars for Enterprise Car Rental. He drove for Enterprise for 17 years and loved his job and also developed a following with many regular customers. Whenever he rode with clients, he always tried to find out two things, no matter where they were from, he wanted to find the name of a person they both knew, and (because of his devout faith) where they went to church. Mr. Scruggs was a long time and faithful member of First Baptist Church. There he was a deacon, was active in Sunday School and loved to sing in choirs, including the First Voices Choir and helping to lead singing prior to Sunday School each Sunday. He was also active with his friends, playing Bridge every Thursday and attending Coffee Clubs that met at Publix from Monday thru Thursday and then at Atlanta Bread Company on Fridays. Mr. Scruggs was also proud of his independence, working, living at home, cooking, cleaning and caring for his yard, he felt blessed to be able to continue doing those things into the last week of his life.
Mr. Scruggs is survived by his daughter and son in law, Nancy & John Romine, of Quitman; two grandsons and their spouses, Josh & Christie Romine of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Spence & Jessie Romine of Jacksonville, FL. He is also survived by five great grandchildren, Ellie Romine, Anna Claire Romine, Jordan Romine, Marleigh Romine and Hudson Romine. He is preceded by his wife, Doris Griner Scruggs and three brothers and three sisters.
The funeral for Mr. Scruggs will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at First Baptist Church. Pastor Chuck Owens and Rev. Ron Hatchett will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made in his memory to First Baptist Church.
