Sterling Leroy Price, of Statenville, age 87, died on January 16, 2005 at Manor Care of Marietta, GA.
He was born on December 12, 1918 in Alapaha to the late Joseph Baker and Elizabeth Rose Weston Price.
He was a WWII Air Force Veteran serving as Chief Air Force Gunnery Instructor at the Laredo Air force base in Texas. After the war he returned to Statenville where he was employed as bookkeeper and clerk for the Hercules Powder Company. His last years before retirement were spent as surveyor and buyer for the Hercules Powder Company in Brunswick. He also served as Probate and Magistrate Judge for Echols County for four years. He was a charter member of the Echols County Historical Society and led in the restoration of the Prine Prescott Log Home in Statenville. He was a long time member of the Statenville United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities, Lay Leader, Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher, Trustee and assisted in building many projects for the church. He will be remembered as a gardener, sharing his vegetables and blueberries with neighbors, friends and families. He was an avid hunter but delighted in the preservation of wild life in and around Echols County. He spent hours watching the deer and turkey wildlife and feeding them.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Henderson Price of Statenville; son and daughter in law, Joseph Sterling and Kathy Hisey Price of Woodstock; daughter and son in law, Marjorie Virginia (Ginny) and Dwight Brown of Kingsport, TN.; five grandchildren, Sonya and Chris Adams, Amy and Jeremy Truitt, Carrie Duke, Matthew Brown and Abby Brown; great grandchildren, Mackenzie and Olivia Adams, Megan Truitt and Jonathan Duke; numerous nieces and nephews; sister, Sidney Price Mitchell of Cordele; sister in law, Rebecca Powell of Tallahassee, FL. He was preceded in death by two half-sisters, Gertrude Price Harrell and Ruth Price McBride and a brother Jack Hilton Price.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at the Statenville United Methodist Church with Reverend Charles Ricks and Reverend Fred Foster officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Brushy Creek Cemetery in Ocilla. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 20, 2006 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the McLane Lakewood Funeral Home in Lake Park.
