Specialist Michael Smith, 27, of Statenville, died at Ft. Stewart, Georgia on January 9, 2009. Born in Jackson, Mississippi on December 4, 1981, Michael attended Echols County High School and Valdosta Technical College. He joined the National Guard in February 2006 and went to full time active duty with the Army in June of 2007. A member of Statenville Baptist Church, Michael loved hunting and fishing. He was an avid reader and was gifted in his knowledge of computers and mechanics.
Michael is survived by his parents, Linda and Anthony Everette of Statenville; sisters, Christy M. Howell of Clinton, Mississippi, Mandy L. (Rick) Neely of Terry, Mississippi,; grandmother, Lois Alley of Clinton, Mississippi; grandparents, G.C. and Dolores Everette of Statenville; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends at the McLane Lakewood Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Fort Stewart. The family will have a private committal service.
