Silas Eugene Brimmage, 90, of Hahira, known as Gene to family and friends, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at the Fellowship Home.
He was born Dec. 27, 1925 in Bunker, MO, to David and Nettie Brimmage, and was the second of six children. The family moved around for several years, finally settling in Florida. On March 22, 1944 he joined the U.S. Army at the age of 18. A year later he was shot through the back after crossing the Rhine and later honorably discharged. He received the following Distinguished Service Decorations: one Oversea Stripe; European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon; two Bronze Battle Stars; Combat Infantry Badge; Purple Heart; and Good Conduct Medal. He moved to Valdosta in 1969 with his wife, Frances, and their two children. Gene owned two gas stations in Valdosta, in the early 70's he owned a BP right off I-75 on N. Valdosta Rd. and later an AMOCO on W. Hill Ave. till the late 80's. He eventually retired and did the retirement thing: golfing, fishing, shooting pool and whatever else he could find to do at the Senior Citizens Center in Valdosta. Around 2007 he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's/Dementia, and was able to stay at home until about 2011, when he moved to Fellowship Home to live the remainder of his life. In 2015 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Gene is survived by a son, Gene Brimmage of Hahira; a daughter, Karen Morin of Fayetteville, NC; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother and a sister. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Brimmage in 1996.
The Funeral Services for Mr. Brimmage will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 29, 2016, at the Mausoleum Chapel at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Interment will follow in the cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Valdosta Senior Community Center, 1360 E Park Ave, Valdosta, GA 31602.
