Shirley Braverman Perlman

Shirley Braverman Perlman, 87, of Valdosta, died on Monday, November 10, 2008 at South Georgia Medical Center. Born in Alabama to the late Hyman & Ester Braverman, she had lived here since 1946. Mrs. Perlman graduated from the Florida State College for Women, now FSU, and began her career as a teacher in Orlando, Florida schools. She and her husband Jake, owned and operated The Famous Store in Downtown Valdosta for many years. She served on the board of the South Georgia Regional Library and served as one of the first board members of the Girl's Club prior to it becoming a part of the Boy's & Girl's Club. Following her husband's death, she traveled with family and friends, often staying for some time in such places as Iceland, Italy, Los Angeles and Vancouver Island. During this time, she frequently volunteered to teach English to new immigrants from Russia and other places.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffry and Leslie Perlman of Washington D.C., Rodney and Robin Perlman of Malibu, CA and Kim and Laura Perlman of Valdosta; grandchildren, Jordan Perlman of Ithaca, NY, Michael Perlman of Washington D.C., Addy Perlman of Valdosta. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Perlman and her sisters, Irene Myers and Maxine Lazarus.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Rabbi Moshe Elbaz officiating.
