Shirley Anne Swain Register, a beloved member of the community, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 in Little Rock, AR, following a prolonged period of declining health. She was 89 years old. She was born in Jackson, MS to the late Samuel Alfred Swain and Sara Charlotte Hammond Swain. During Shirley’s childhood, her father worked for the Department of Defense during WW II; this led the family to live in various southeastern states before finally settling in Macon, GA. Shirley graduated from A.L. Miller High School and went on to pursue higher education at Wesleyan College in Macon, Emory University in Atlanta, and finally earning her degree from Valdosta State College. She later furthered her education by obtaining a Master’s Degree in Childhood Education.
For 28 years, Mrs. Register dedicated herself to teaching in the Valdosta City Schools, making a positive impact on countless young lives. Her passion for life extended beyond the classroom, as she was an avid gardener who nurtured beautiful Azaleas, Camellias, and even Grapefruit trees, sharing their beauty with loved ones. She was an active member of First Baptist Church for many years.
Shirley leaves behind a lasting legacy. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Dave and Ann Batts Register of Maumelle, AR; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Anne Walden Register of Madison, MS; and son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Denise Bonner Register of Bishop, GA. Cherished memories will continue through her grandchildren: Amy Register (Derron) Martin of Fredericksburg, VA; Benjamin David (Jenny) Register of Conway, AR; Allen Register of Dothan, Al; Haley Register (Kyle) Hancock of Madison, MS; Katlyn Register (Ashley) Jackson of Dothan, AL; and Laura Register (Daniel) Teague of Cumming, GA. Her great grandchildren include Caleb Martin, Lauren, Haven, and Audrey Register, Banks and Briggs Hancock, Millie Kate and Charleigh Jackson, and Watts and Owen Teague. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel David Register, Jr., and grandson Robert David Register.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Shirley's life will be held at 3 pm on Saturday, February 3, 2024 in the Langdale Chapel of First Baptist Church. Reverend Mac Weaver and Dr. Chuck Owens will officiate the service, followed by burial at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 2-3 pm in Langdale Chapel at FBC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Food Ministry at First Baptist Church of Valdosta.
