Shelby Thomas “S.T.” Stovall, 97, of Valdosta, passed away following a brief illness on Saturday, May 29, 2021, at Fellowship Home. He was born on January 20, 1924, to the late Gus Bentley Stovall and Mary Lucinda Tudor Stovall. He was born in Greenville, KY and moved to Nashville, TN at an early age. After High School he was drafted into the US Navy in 1942, and during WWII he was stationed at San Francisco and Pearl Harbor. After the war he went to Georgetown, KY, and graduated from Georgetown University. Following graduation he started teaching school as a science teacher in Adel and Tifton, GA. It was here that he met the former Dorris Marie Johnson, they were married in 1956. He went on to receive his master’s degree and Doctorate from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University. During his teaching career, he taught fifth and sixth grade Science and PE for thirty-one years in the school systems of Valdosta, Jennings, FL, Nashville, and Willacoochee. He retired in the mid 1980’s and was a member of the retired teacher’s association. An avid sports fan, he loved high school football and basketball. He attended Crossroads Baptist Church and Greenwood Baptist Church.
Mr. Stovall is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and George Clary of Lilburn, GA, Cynthia and Mike Hammock of Snellville, GA, and Karen and Joe Wood, of Valdosta; his grandchildren, Virginia Clary of Atlanta, GA, and Dr. Caroline Clary Molter (Zach), of Greenville, SC; and several nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorris Marie Johnson Stovall, two infant sons, and two sisters, Marie Stovall Carter Head, and Imogene Stovall Jones.
A graveside service will be held at 10am on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Sunset Hill Cemetery with Rev. Mike Nelligan and Mr. Bill Daugherty officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4-6 pm at the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O.
