Searcy D. (Mac) McClure, Jr., 91, of Valdosta died Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at his residence. He was born on August 1, 1925 in Huntsville, AL to the late Searcy D. McClure, Sr. and Virginia Emily Hale McClure. Mr. McClure served in World War II and was the first lieutenant commissioned overseas and received a purple heart and the bronze star. Mr. McClure attended Emory University in Atlanta and graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1949. He retired after thirty three years as manager from Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company in December of 1982. Mr. McClure was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, on the Salvation Army Board of Advisors and the Valdosta and American Camellia Societies.
He is survived by his wife, Helen (Fainsy) Branch McClure, daughter, Emily M. Newbern (George), son, Searcy D. McClure III (Tina), four grandchildren, Trent Matthews (Courtney R.), Kelley Matthews, Searcy McClure IV and Clarke Stone McClure (Malory Lee Gunter), four great grandchildren, Peyton Matthews, Palmer Matthews, Morgan McClure and Margeoux Fainsy-June McClure. Mr. McClure is predeceased by his son, William Clarke McClure.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 28, 2017 at eleven a. m. at Christ Episcopal Church with The Rev. Dr. Dave Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 320 Smithland Place, Valdosta, GA 31601 or to Hospice of South GA, P. O. Box 1727, Valdosta, GA 31603.
