Samuel Ashley Jones, Sr.

Samuel "Sammy" Ashley Jones, Sr., 72, of Valdosta, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, May 7, 2010, with his family at his side. Born in Valdosta, on September 19, 1937 he was the son of the late Raymond and Margaret Screws Jones. Sammy retired from the Valdosta Fire Dept. after having served 42 years as a fire fighter. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Sammy was a loving and devoted Husband, Father, Papa and great grand Papa. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his friends at the senior center.

Surviors include his devoted wife of 52 years, Sylvia Rigdon Jones; daughter, Carol Becton Gossard of Valdosta; son and daughter-in-law, Ashley and Donna Jones of Hahira; sister and brother-in-law Melanie J. and Bobby Henry of Valdosta; grandchildren and spouses, Amanda Becton and J. Ryce Martin, Ashlin Brook and Josey Copeland, Logan Garrett Jones and Fiance' Arlene Curtis, great grandchildren, Jace Dasher Copeland, Piper Elizabeth Martin and Ryder Samuel Jones, sister-in-law, Patsy C. Jones of Jacksonville, Fl., several special nieces and nephews; special friends, Gene Wisehart, Roy McNeal and his brothers from the Fire House. He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Hollis Jones.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at 4 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church with Dr. Gene Wisehart and Pastor Mickey Wisehart officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home home on Monday from 6 – 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Grace Hospice.
