Sammie S. Atkins, Sr., 82, native of, and lifelong resident of Valdosta, passed away December 1, 2017, at South Georgia Medical Center, after a brief illness. He was born on June 17, 1935.
Mr. Atkins leaves to mourn him, a daughter, Robin Gober, a son, Sammy Atkins, Jr. a granddaughter, Cori Gober, a grandson, Robby Gober, and a great granddaughter, Ella Grace Anderson. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Shelby Jean Atkins (Jones), wife of 50 years. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde, Norman, and William (Spooky) Atkins.
A Commercial/Industrial Painting Contractor for over 40 years, Mr. Atkins employed hundreds of people through the years. He was a golfer and loved the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, the Valdosta Wildcats, and the Atlanta Braves.
Mr. Atkins was most proud of his service in the Navy during the Korean War Era. He was a Boilers Mate First Class and a diver aboard the USS San Marcos, LSD-25.
As per his wishes, Mr. Atkins was cremated. His remains are to be dispersed with those of his wife, at a special location. At his request, no services are to be held.
