Sammie Maniuse Smith

April 26, 1933 — February 8, 2006

Sammie M. Smith, 72, of Valdosta, died at his home on Wednesday, February 8, 2006. Born in Union County, Florida, he was the son of the late Carl M. and Lena Newsome Smith. Mr. Smith served his country during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Navy and had made his home in Valdosta since 1955. Mr. Smith worked with BellSouth for 41 years as a cable repairman. He was a member of Francis Lake Baptist Church.

Survivors are his wife, Jeanette Rentz Smith of Valdosta; daughters and sons in law, Sherry and Michael Maxwell of Atlanta, Marie and Danny Bennett of Thomasville, Kellie and Charlie McSwain of Amelia Island; stepchildren, Gary and Donna Rentz of Rome, Terry and Rebecca Rentz of Valdosta; five grandchildren, Brenna Farmer, Coleman Lovern of Valdosta, Rebecca Bennett of Thomasville, Rachel Rentz and Morgan Rentz of Rome; sisters and brothers in law, Elmyra Roberts of Jacksonville, Glenda and Wayne Smith of Lake Butler, Florida, brother and sister in law, Marrill and Dolly Mae Smith of Louisa, Kentucky. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucile Peterson Smith and brothers, Johnnie F. Smith and Wilber Carl Smith.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2006 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Eldridge Lyons will officiate. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Francis Lake Baptist Church Building Fund or to Hospice of South Georgia.
