Salvatore Verrilli, 93, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at Fellowship Home. Born in Paterson, NJ on July 14, 1924, Salvatore was a son of the late Michael and Maria Verrilli. He grew up in Paterson before joining the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Montrose during WWII as a gunner in the Pacific. After the war he returned to New Jersey, met and married Rose Marie Pellitteri, on June 30, 1946. Sal and Rose Marie enjoyed nearly 71 years of marriage, until her death in March of 2017. In the mid 1950’s the Verrilli’s moved to Miami, Florida, where Sal worked for the City of Miami as a motor pool mechanic working on police cars. He retired in 1981 and they made their home in Valdosta. Serving as foster parents for many years, Sal and Rose fostered over 100 children in their home, receiving the honor of Foster Parents of the Year in 1987 from the Knights of Columbus. A member of St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church, Sal was an active knight with the Knights of Columbus. He was a handy-man, and loved “fixing” things for family and friends.
Survivors are his daughter, Joanne Meyers of Valdosta; two sons and a daughter in law, Salvatore, Jr. and Jana Verrilli of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. and Jamie Verrilli of Gainesville, FL.; a brother, Lou Verrilli of Paterson, NJ., eight grandchildren, Tracy Reynolds (Ricky), Toni Yates (Jon), Robby Meyers (Terri), Michael Verrilli (Ling), Joseph Verrilli, Sandy Greenblat (Michael), Jennifer Verrilli, and Julia Verrilli. Also surviving are 9 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church. Father Brian LaBurt and Deacon David Lasseter will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.
