Ruth Elizabeth Baker

November 25, 1940 — September 30, 2012

Ruth Elizabeth Smith Baker, 71, died Sunday, September 30, 2012 after a short illness. She was born in Ty Ty, Georgia to the late Arwyn and India Bell Smith. Mrs. Baker lived in Valdosta (Walkers Crossing) since 1969. Mrs. Baker retired from the Moody Air Force Base Exchange. She had also worked at the base commissary. She fulfilled her dream by owning her own business, Baker's Green Thumb. A member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Valdosta, she was also a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. Her favorite pastimes were fishing, playing bingo and being on the dart league. She enjoyed getting out and being with others.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Louis Gonzalez of Valdosta; two sons and daughters- in-law, Alpheus Jerry and Tracy Baker of Carrollton, Randy and Sue Ann Baker of Valdosta, nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one sister and brother-in-law, Alice Faye and Raul Nieves of Ft. Meyers, Florida, two nieces, Debbie Aitola and Penny Morgan, her special adopted families, Kathleen Parsons, Kelly Stone and Bobbie Jo Courson all of Valdosta; and special recognition of close friends Audrey Tungler and Betty Harrell. Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her husband, Alphius W. Baker and a brother, Marvin A. Smith.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October, 5, 2012 at 2 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church. Reverend Jim Schappaugh will officiate. Burial will follow in the New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Baker will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
