Russell D. (Russ) Register, 78, of Valdosta died on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Langdale Hospice House following a lengthy illness. He was born on September 7, 1934 in Ben Hill County to the late Russell DeWitt, Sr. and Clara Sheppard Register. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church where through the years he served as an usher, out-reach leader, and greeter. He was a former member and past-president of the Lions Club. He also served as president of the Dealers Advisory Council to the President of the National Association of Petroleum Retailers. Russ served his country honorably in the United States Army. Russ enjoyed classic cars and traveling, especially in his motor home. He was the owner/operator of Lake Park Shell and Tire.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Betty Lynn Register of Valdosta; children, Jimmy and Cathy Register of Stockton, Janet Register and Jeff Register, Carrie and Ryan Feinberg, and Wayne and Angela Starkey all of Valdosta; nine grandchildren, Kayla, Johnnie and Eddie Cox of Valdosta, Erica and Mike Stalvey of Jacksonville, Florida, Ronnie Kerestus of Tifton, Jana Register, Hailey, Kailey and Dylan Williams all of Valdosta; two great-grandchildren, Drake and Erin of Jacksonville; three step-grandchildren, Alex and Jason Breitmaier, Patricia Hughes and John Zyduck; 6 step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Crosby of Lake Park and Joyce Bargeron of Valdosta; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Danny and Louise Godwin of Cleveland, Georgia and a sister-in-law, Vickie Godwin of Lake Park; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Register and two brothers-in-law, Matt Bargeron and Farrell Godwin. The family expresses their heart-felt appreciation to Lakehaven Nursing Home as well as Langdale Hospice House for the care, love and compassion shown and given to Russ and the family.
Services for Mr. Register will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. John Yates officiating. The burial will follow in the Campground Cemetery in Morven. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
